Jay DeMerit earns call-up to the United States national team

United States Soccer Federation announced today that Vancouver Whitecaps FC captain Jay DeMerit has been called up to the USA national team for a pair of friendly matches versus South American opposition later this month.

The United States will meet Argentina at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday, March 26, before taking on Paraguay at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, March 29.

The former Watford FC defender is one of 24 players to be selected by USA head coach Bob Bradley, with the Green Bay, Wisconsin, native being one of four Major League Soccer players in this latest American squad. The New York Red Bulls pair of defender Tim Ream and striker Juan Agudelo were selected, as was Los Angeles Galaxy captain Landon Donovan. Two-thirds of Bradley's side all appeared at last year's FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

DeMerit will meet up with his American teammates in Cary, North Carolina, on Sunday, with Bradley to then select 18 players that will travel to New Jersey on Thursday, March 24. Should DeMerit be selected in the 18-player squad to face Argentina, the centre back will miss Whitecaps FC's first away match in MLS, as Vancouver head to PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, for their first-ever meeting with Eastern Conference side Philadelphia Union on Saturday, March 26.
