Vancouver Whitecaps FC match against Real Salt Lake postponed

Today’s Major League Soccer match between Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Real Salt Lake has been postponed after club and league officials ruled the pitch at Empire Field unplayable. The match will be rescheduled at a later date in the season.

“We have been working around the clock to do everything in our powers to keep the field as dry as possible,” said Paul Barber, Vancouver Whitecaps FC chief executive officer. “Unfortunately, the combination of consistent rain and limited drainage options available for a temporary grass field has left us no other choice but to postpone today’s match. Tickets for today’s game will be valid for the rescheduled match and we will work directly with all ticket holders who are unable to attend the new date. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”

This week, temporary grass sod was laid on Bell Pitch at Empire Field in preparation for the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge match on Monday, July 18, between Whitecaps FC and Manchester City FC.

“The forecast for Sunday and Monday looks promising and we fully anticipate Monday’s match against FA Cup winners Manchester City FC will go ahead as planned,” added Barber.

Tickets for Monday’s match between English Premier League giants Manchester City FC and Whitecaps FC are available for $60 (including HST) and are subject to applicable service charges and fees. Fans can purchase these tickets at all Ticketmaster Ticket Centres, online at ticketmaster.ca, or Charge-by-Phone at 1.855.6.GO-CAPS (1.855.646.2277).
