Sunday night final

On-going Progress at Empire Field

Crews from JB Lawns and their local sub-contractors, as well as Whitecaps FC and PNE staff were all on hand throughout the day and this evening, to assist in the manual efforts to speed drying of the temporary grass pitch that was recently laid on Bell Pitch at Empire Field.

In addition to pumps and water vacuums, old-fashioned elbow grease has so far proved the charm, as rotating crews have been literally pushing the water out to the sides and off of the pitch. Early this afternoon, trenches were dug around the perimeter of the pitch to aid in the diversion and dispersal of water.

As of 7 p.m. PT this evening, Environment Canada’s local forecast for Vancouver shows showers ending overnight, clearing in the morning, and a high of 22°C for Monday. As of 11 p.m. PT this evening, there was no rain falling at Empire Field.

“The restoration efforts have been successful so far, and we are continuing to feel confident about the outlook for tomorrow night’s match,” reported Paul Barber, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer from Empire Field this evening. “The weather forecast is encouraging, and we are continuing to do everything in our power to bring the pitch to playable condition. Our partners have put forth an outstanding effort and we are very grateful for their participation.”
