'Caps Chronicle: Ready for Residency

'Caps Chronicle - September 2, 2011

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:

With the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency program undergoing a significant expansion, Megan Stewart writes about a local Vancouver lad who has experienced the benefits of the Residency program (Megan Stewart – Vancouver Courier).

The growth of the ‘Caps development structure means that a number of eager new faces have arrived. Included in the group is another Lower Mainland product looking to make the best of his upcoming opportunity (Tom Berridge – Burnaby Now).

On the MLS team, midfielder Gershon Koffie continues to improve. The 20-year-old scored his first goal of the season against Chicago last month, and head coach Tom Soehn envisions more of the same from the talented youngster, “I don't think we see enough of the offensive qualities that I saw when I scouted him. He can supply some offense and I'm constantly pushing him to bring that aspect of his game out” (Bruce Constantineau – Vancouver Sun).

Want an update on Bell Pitch downtown? The Vancouver Sun got a sneak peak of some of the improvements that will ensure a wonderfully upgraded facility when Whitecaps FC move into their new home, October 2 against Portland Timbers (Vancouver Sun).

WHITECAPS FC IN THE HOUSE:

With today marking exactly one month until Vancouver Whitecaps FC move into Bell Pitch downtown, Brandon Timko highlights some improvements of our new home. “The biggest change to the venue – originally built in 1983 – will of course be the new retractable roof, which will turn the stadium into a year-round open-air facility. With support masts each measuring 47 metres tall, the cable-supported roof will be the biggest of its kind in the world and will produce a 100 metre by 85 metre blue sky opening” (Brandon Timko – whitecapsfc.com).

After having a few days off, check out this training piece. Whitecaps FC players got back to work as they prepare for their match next weekend against New York Red Bulls (Paul Albi – whitecapsfc.com).

The 'Caps saw another fresh face at training this week, with trialist Johnny Dunleavy looking for a shot at playing for the ‘Caps. Martin MacMahon writes, “After being, in his description, “blighted by injuries” during his last two seasons with Wolves, the defender is now seeking a new challenge this side of the pond” (Martin MacMahon – MLSsoccer.com).

We have another ‘Legend’ sighting!!  Check out this piece as Carl Valentine hangs out with some of the kids he has been working with over the summer at Vancouver Whitecaps FC camps (Zac Ratcliffe – whitecapsfc.com).

With a new feature, ‘Women’s Weekly’ making its debut, check out how this summer’s edition of Vancouver Whitecaps FC women are preparing as they return to university for another year of soccer and studies (Jamieson Brooks – whitecapsfc.com).
