WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:
It's exactly ‘one’ day until the season opener against Montreal Impact on March 10th at BC Place. To add to the excitement we’ve been doing a countdown themed ‘Caps Chronicle for each day leading up to First Kick. Today marks the final ‘one’ in the series, so let’s dig in.
Since Vancouver Whitecaps FC joined Major League Soccer (MLS) last season, it’s been only once in a blue moon that they’ve played host to rivals Montreal Impact. Even with the expansion into MLS for Montreal this year, the opportunity to compete may only come once this season (depending on the Amway Canadian Championship). The new conference based schedule means tomorrow will be the only MLS regular season meeting between the two sides this year, and we’ll be counting on the fans to help us make the most of our home-field advantage. While this Saturday’s game will be the first-ever MLS match for Montreal, it won't be the 'Caps first rodeo, so expect the squad to come out swinging with a one-two punch. The slate has been wiped and it’s back to square-one for all MLS teams tomorrow, and Montreal just happens to be first-in-line for what the ‘Caps hope will be a tremendous season. Preseason provided some first impressions of what fans can hope to expect tomorrow as teams compete for first-crack at topping the standings. Head coach Martin Rennie hopes his squad will continue that form into the regular season, revealing the straight-forward key to his approach in a press conference yesterday… “Positivity.” (Bruce Constantineau – Vancouver Sun)
Wearing one’s heart on one’s sleeve is true of many footballers, but it’s especially true of centreback Jay DeMerit, who’s captain's armband is a symbol of his commitment to the team. “I have to be the spine of the team. I have to communicate and make sure our team shape stays consistent,” the defender told one reporter. “My voice is just as important to me as my physical game. I have to stay positive, too. Encourage those who need it, and chastise those who can take it.” (Jason McWilliams – The Province)
There’s only one speed for ‘Caps striker Sébastien Le Toux, and that’s full-speed. Sébastien is like an engine on the pitch and is easily one of the fittest players in the squad with a first-rate work ethic. After coming to Vancouver from Philadelphia last season, Le Toux is keen on new beginnings, telling reporters, “It’s about saying last year is done and this is a new chapter.” Chapter one of Le Toux’s Whitecaps story begins tomorrow. (Marc Weber – The Province)
One reporter is calling Saturday’s match the, “meeting of top 2012 SuperDraft picks at BC Place” in allusion to the first and second picks from this year’s draft: Impact rookie Andrew Wenger and Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks. Read who they think will shine the brightest as each patiently yearns to make their professional debut. (Charles Boehm – MLSsoccer.com)
Whitecaps assistant coach Paul Ritchie is one-of-many Scots who’ve joined the club this season. The Province’s Marc Weber spoke with the former Manchester City player and Scottish international for a little one-on-one. While Ritchie has adjusted well to living in Vancouver, find out what two foods he still has his parents bring over whenever they visit from across the pond. (Marc Weber – The Province)
