The sun was shining early this morning as hundreds of volunteers took over the street corners of downtown, Vancouver to raise donations for Raise-a-Reader Day. Since its creation in 1997, the Raise-a-Reader campaign has raised over $5.75 million dollars for literacy programs, schools and community libraries across British Columbia.
After the success of last year’s event, Vancouver Whitecaps FC could not wait to get back into the action. This morning, defender Jordon Harvey, and midfielders Matt Watson and Jun Marques Davidson got up early and jumped into their gear on the corner of Georgia and Burrard. Together with club legends Carl Valentine and Bob Lenarduzzi, as well as the very enthusiastic Spike, they exchanged newspapers for donations, took photos, signed autographs and….danced?
Over the course of the morning we were visited by Fin, the Vancouver Police, the Health Minister of BC, and many other influential members of the community who were also raising donations for this amazing campaign. After some exciting antics from the duo of Fin and Spike and some strategic selling skills by the team, the day wrapped up as a great success. Furthemore, a friendly fundraising competition ensuing between our three players ended with a very pleased Matt Watson taking the prize.
We were once again thrilled by the amount of people that took time out of their busy morning to help support the Raise-a-Reader campaign. We would like to express our appreciation to fans and everyone else who visited us today in support of literacy in B.C., and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
