'Caps at College - Week 6

Jenna Richardson (OSU Athletics)

Vancouver Whitecaps FC alumni were once again in action for their college teams last weekend.

Alex Rowley dazzled for Simon Fraser University while Jenna Richardson and Amber Brooks continue to light it up for Oregon State and North Carolina respectively.

Goalkeepers Gurveen Clair and Alyssa Williamson also had memorable weekends, with both recording key shutouts.

MEN

Rowley found the back of the net in both of SFU’s games in North and South Dakota.

On Thursday night, the central midfielder scored in the 47th minute as The Clan swept aside the University of Sioux Falls 5-1. It was a much tighter affair against the University of Mary Marauders two days later, with SFU needing extra time to win 3-2. Rowley once again got on the scoresheet with a goal off a corner kick.

Former U-23 PDL squad member Niko Saler recorded an assist as his Alberta Golden Bears capped off a dominant weekend with a 4-0 result over the Winnipeg Wesmen.

WOMEN

Richardson became the first female player since fellow ‘Caps alum Chelsea Buckland to score a brace for the Beavers as Oregon State defeated Utah 2-0 on Friday. Her efforts saw her named Pac-12 offensive player of the week.

The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels picked up an impressive result when they beat unbeaten Virginia Tech 3-1 last Thursday night. Brooks confidently slotted home a penalty kick for her third goal of the season to clinch the game. Earlier in the match she teamed up with fellow ‘Caps alum Ranee Premji to set up North Carolina’s first goal in just the eighth minute.

Sophomore Abigail Raymer drilled home the equalizing goal – her fourth of the season – in the second half as Missouri toppled Ole Miss 2-1 on Friday night.

At Washington State, Clair made seven big saves, including two in overtime to help her side to a 0-0 draw with UCLA in Pac-12 action. It was Clair’s ninth shutout for the Cougars.

Williamson had shutouts in both of UBC’s wins on the weekend. The Thunderbirds picked up their first road win of the season with a 4-0 decision over Winnipeg before Williamson made five saves in her team’s 3-0 victory over Manitoba Bisons.

Senior Erin McNulty started in goal and made four saves as No.11 Penn State defeated Illinois 4-0 on Sunday.

Defender Shannon Woeller helped Rutgers to a clean sheet as her school beat USF – featuring 2012 ‘Caps teammates Taylor Patterson and Demi Stokes – 1-0 for their first BIG EAST win of the season.

‘Caps alum Monica Lam-Feist set up Wisconsin’s only goal in the Badgers’ triumph against Michigan State.

And lastly, University of South Florida toiled hard for a 1-0 win against Seton Hall in New Jersey. A cross from Patterson in the 65th minute was turned into the net for the winner.
