Whitecaps FC to play first MLS Cup Playoff match

VANCOUVER, BC – In the club's second Major League Soccer season, Vancouver Whitecaps FC will play their first ever MLS Cup Playoff match next Thursday, November 1, when they visit LA Galaxy in the single match Western Conference Knockout Round. The match will mark the first time a Canadian club has played an MLS Cup Playoff match, as fifth-place Whitecaps FC take on fourth-place LA Galaxy – the defending MLS Cup champions. The Galaxy feature several international stars, including former England national team captain David Beckham, United States national team captain Landon Donovan, and Ireland national team captain Robbie Keane.

If the Knockout Match is tied after 90 minutes, 30 minutes (two 15-minute halves) of extra time will be played. If the game is still tied after extra time, the match would be decided on penalties.

The winner of the Western Conference Knockout Match will advance to face first-place San Jose Earthquakes in the Western Conference Semifinal series. Led by MLS leading goalscorer Chris Wondolowski, the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield after finishing the regular season as the top overall team in the MLS standings.
