End of the world or start of a new era?

End of the world

The Y2K bug was meant to wreak havoc on the world more than a decade ago, but thankfully nothing came to pass.

Lately, the doomsayers have been playing up the Mayan Apocalypse, apparently taking place today.

Well, the fact this piece has seen the light of day means it’s still business as usual for the world while those with steadfast beliefs in Armageddon sheepishly – not for the first time - have to emerge from their elaborate underground bunkers.

That said, with the end of the world apparently looming, it made many people stop for just a moment and think about what they would want to accomplish before the end of planet earth as we know it.

In the spirit of the end of the world, Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie took some time to divulge his own bucket list for the 'Caps.

His ambitions are logical, ones we're all eager to see come to fruition. And if he has it his way, he'll have the 'Caps rise to a thundering crescendo before all is said and done.

As he told us earlier in the week, "There may not be much time to fit this in before Friday, but here is what I would wish for..."

1. Beating Portland and Seattle and winning the Cascadia Cup:

“A first franchise win over expansion cousins Portland. We have three chances coming up and two of those games are at BC Place. We need the same against Seattle, culminating in a first Cascadia Cup championship for our club in MLS.”

2. Sending LA Galaxy into a black hole:

“Second, I would want to beat LA Galaxy. They are the best team in MLS and we play them at home twice next season. We started off a long way behind them, but as the season went on we closed the gap and now we need to take the next step against them.”

3. Winning the Amway Canadian Championship:

“My third wish is to win the Canadian Championship and qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. We are the number one seed this season and if we can make our way to the final we would host the second leg at BC Place.”

4. Winning MLS Cup:

“My penultimate wish would be for Vancouver Whitecaps FC to become MLS Cup champions.”

5. Winning MLS Cup at home:

Lastly, merely lifting the MLS Cup wouldn’t be enough for the affable Rennie.

“My final wish would be that we could make that happen at BC Place in front of 55,000 screaming ‘Caps fans.”

And unless there's a late change to the days events, the Mayan prophecy will not be fulfilled, which means we will all be around to see these wishes become reality.
