The holiday season is the time of year that everyone gets a chance to relax, including members of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Most ‘Caps players have flown back home to spend the holidays with their families and friends.
We asked a few players and staff how they will be spending their holidays this year.
‘Caps goalkeeper Brad Knighton said things for him are changing up a bit this year.
“Every year we head to Philadelphia to celebrate with my wife's side of the family. We normally would have a huge feast of cheese steaks, prime rib, and banana fosters on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas Day, open up gifts and hang out with family. This year however, my sister in law just gave birth to her second child so we will be celebrating it in Greensboro, North Carolina.”
Whitecaps FC striker Omar Salgado will be spending Christmas with his mom’s side of the family this year.
“Family traditions depend on the year, one year it’s with my dad's side, and the other it’s with my mom's. My dad’s family is big so it gets really fun. We have a big party on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day we play soccer in the morning and go for lunch after that. With my mom’s side we have a small family, and my grandma is 87, so it ends pretty early. We are with my mom’s side this year so we have a dinner and have a gift exchange and then everyone goes home.”
Last but not least, club ambassador Carl Valentine shared with us his holiday plans. Beyond the usual dinner and gift exchange, Carl has another holiday tradition he always looks forward to.
“My holiday tradition is to make a call to England on Skype around 9 p.m. PT (8 hours ahead) and talk to my mum, four sisters, and my many nieces and nephews just after they finish their Christmas dinner.”
