This past weekend, Whitecaps FC welcomed some of the best girls soccer talent in British Columbia and Canada at the annual Whitecaps FC Girls Showcase presented by Sport Chek at Newton Athletic Park.
Participation at the event was at capacity with over 125 teams. Provinces from across the country were represented with Alberta sides Calgary Foothills and Edmonton Drillers, Quebec side ACP Lions, Ontario side Nepean SC, and Manitoba side FC Northwest. The tournament featured a Premier division with all eight EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) clubs participating in addition to a competitive Championship division.
For the first time, several new Whitecaps FC Academy Centres brought teams to participate, including the Island Academy and Kootenay Academy. In addition, Whitecaps FC also included the club’s Girls Elite team vs. the University of the Fraser Valley as a feature match.
For the many University and College coaches, as well as Whitecaps FC coaching staff, it was fantastic one-stop scouting opportunity to see athletes and teams demonstrate their talents for scholarship opportunities and Whitecaps FC Residency and Girls Elite programs. Already, more than a dozen boys have moved from the BCSPL into the ‘Caps Residency program, and more than 15 girls into the Girls Elite program. In addition many of the participating athletes have picked up scholarships over the past few years.
Next weekend, from March 29 to 31, the Whitecaps FC Boys Showcase presented by Sport Chek will hit Newton Athletic with a vast number of top boys on display, in addition to Whitecaps FC U-18 and U-16 Residency teams feature games against rivals Seattle Sounders FC Academy on Saturday, March 30.
