United snapped their club-record winless streak last weekend with a 1-0 win against San Jose, then reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup with a midweek victory. Whitecaps FC hit the road after back-to-back wins at home, last a 4-3 victory against the New England Revolution 10 days ago.

- United took the lead after winning a penalty after just 10 minutes. Defender Chris Korbo dribbled into the box and was tripped on an early tackle by defender Justin Morrow, and Chris Pontius converted the resulting spot kick, beating San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch low and to his left.
- United goalkeeper Bill Hamid was called upon to make three saves in keeping the shutout. He was beaten in the 73rd minute by forward Adam Jahn’s left-footed offering, but it banged off the far post.

- “It’s been brutal,” said United coach Ben Olsen. “It’s been brutal for the staff and the players, it’s been brutal for the organization, it’s been brutal for our fans. But what I’m most proud of is we kept things moving forward. We had some bumps but for the organization, the owners with the loyalty they’ve had and the fans who haven’t given up hope, all that stuff means a lot to these players and my staff that continue to do the best we can.”

- “I thought the first half he looked sharp. He looked like his old self, he looked aggressive. Like I said, to be honest, the win means more to any of us than any scoring. For our fans, especially at home, to get this win was huge for us.”
- After going 10 league games without a shutout, it was a second in three contests for United, their first since back-to-back clean sheets March 9 and 16.
- “The decision-making was great tonight from everybody all around. The confidence was high. Ball movement and off-the-ball movement was really good,” said goalkeeper Bill Hamid. “There was a real commitment to get on the end of things and to get the ball and go at players. There was no fear and we’ve just got to continue with that mentality.”
- On Wednesday, United advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 win against the New England Revolution at the Maryland SoccerPlex. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC
Vancouver Whitecaps FC return to action after a weekend off, winning for a second match in a row in their last match, a 3-1 victory against Chivas USA on June 19 at BC Place. Whitecaps FC sit in fifth place in the Western Conference with 22 points from 15 matches.
LAST MATCH
- Chivas USA opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match. Collecting the ball in a seemingly harmless position well out from the box on the right, Tristan Bowen let fly with a dipping shot that sailed into the top left corner of Brad Knighton’s goal.
- But Whitecaps FC were in the lead by halftime, thanks to a pair of goals in first-half stoppage time. First, Jordan Harvey got on the end of a loose ball at the edge of the area after Camilo Sanvezzo swung and missed on a Russell Teibert pass, slamming home from just inside the box.
- Moments later, Camilo fired the Whitecaps into the lead, after Teibert stripped Gabriel Farfan on the wing before finding the Brazilian. Camilo raced into the area and turned a Chivas defender before firing across goal into the bottom left corner.
- Camilo scored his second in the 81st minute to seal the win, banging home a loose ball in the area which deflected off defender Wálter Vílchez before finding the netting.
- Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made no changes to the team that held off the New England Revolution for a 4-3 win at BC Place.

- Whitecaps FC hit for multiple goals in a game for the sixth consecutive match, with 16 goals in their last six matches.
- “We kept good possession and created some good chances and scored another goal from Camilo, who is on fire right now, and linking up so well with Kenny [Miller],” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “ … In the end we had a chance to score four of five so I’m really pleased.”
- Said Miller: “That’s a fantastic run of form. Particularly in the second half, we pulled some great stuff together; it’s another great win, three points and it moves us into the playoffs.”
- Camilo Sanvezzo scored a pair of goals in the win against Chivas USA, and now has six goals and three assists in the last five games.
- Jordan Harvey’s goal was the 10,000th regular season goal scored in MLS history, coming midway through the league’s 18th season. For Harvey, it was his second consecutive game with a goal, and his third in the last four games.
- “I didn’t know that MLS was reaching that milestone … so it’s really cool. I don’t score many goals, and it’s been kind of a crazy run right now,” said Harvey. “I’ve been really excited about this strange run as a defender getting three goals in four games And, then that goal makes it even sweeter. It’s really cool.”
- Said Rennie: “I think he is continuing to get into good positions and I think he was also involved in the third goal. He has a great work ethic, fantastically fit, he can go up and down that line all day and we encourage him to get forward.”
- Russell Teibert collected two assists in a game for the second time in the last three matches, also setting up a pair of goals in the 3-2 loss at Seattle. Over the last seven games, of which he’s started six, Teibert has two goals and six assists.
- “He has recently been playing fantastically well,” head coach Martin Rennie said. “In the first 20 minutes of the first half, he was maybe a little bit below the level that he’s shown for us in recent games, but he turned that around, and at halftime we challenged him for more and he gave us more.”
- There could be some quality additions as both center back Brad Rusin and central midfielder Gershon Koffie returned to full training ahead of the United match. Rusin has been dealing with a calf injury while Koffie has battled a quadriceps strain.
