WFC Reserves win 4-0 over Sounders FC

LANGLEY, BC – On a beautiful day in Langley, Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves (3W-0L-3D) earned a huge 4-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC Reserves (1W-4L-1D) at Willoughby Community Park, next to the Langley Events Centre.

Whitecaps FC U-18 Residency players Marco Bustos and Sam Adekugbe shone in the 4-0 win, with Bustos earning two assists and Adekugbe netting a goal and an assist. It was a strong match for the ‘Caps youth before the U-18s depart for Houston to battle in the United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) Finals Week for the second consecutive year.

On 18 minutes, Sounders striker Sammy Ochoa had a great opportunity to give the visitors the early lead, but his shot sailed well over the net.

Just a minute later, the ‘Caps had their first chance of the match when Erik Hurtado fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box but the ball was saved by Sounders FC ‘keeper Marcus Hahnemann.

On 33 minutes, Ochoa had another chance as his volley was again sent over the head of new ‘Caps keeper David Ousted and the net.

With Vancouver edging Seattle 7-4 on shots at the end of the first half, the ‘Caps looked to carry their momentum into the second half.

On 53 minutes, a scramble in the box led to Heinemann hitting a rocket from inside the box, however his shot rang off the crossbar.

Vancouver continued to pressure the Sounders in the final third and in the 56th minute, the ‘Caps took the lead. A blocked shot ended up at the feet of Hurtado near the top of the box. The rookie made no mistake as his shot beat Hahnemann to give the Blue and White the 1-0 lead.

The home side continued their offensive dominance on 63 minutes, when Adekugbe collected the ball from Hurtado, got in alone on Hahnemann and knocked the ball through the legs of the experienced American goalkeeper.

On 74 minutes, the ‘Caps struck again. Yassin Essa flicked the ball onto Adekugbe, who made a nice run down the left side of the pitch before passing the ball to Bustos. The U-18 Residency midfielder made a beautiful pass across the box to an open Tommy Heinemann. The tall striker made no mistake and slid the ball into the back of the net.

In added time, Heinemann netted another goal, after a nice through ball from Bustos, to seal the 4-0 win for the home side as the Reserves continued their undefeated start to the MLS Reserve League season.

Next up, Whitecaps FC Reserves travel to Sandy, Utah, on Tuesday, July 16, to face Real Salt Lake Reserves at America First Field.
