The LA Galaxy return home to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their second meeting of the season in a huge match for both clubs in the Western Conference as the clubs clash Saturday evening at StubHub Center. The teams both sit in playoff positions, but are separated by just two points in the table. The Galaxy saw their two-game winning streak come to an end in a dramatic loss in Portland last weekend, while Whitecaps FC extended their undefeated run to six games with a 3-1 home win against the Chicago Fire.

• The teams are meeting for the only time this season in league play.
• Whitecaps FC opened the scoring on 63 minutes. After coming on as a substitute early in the contest, Russell Teibert opened the scoring, hitting a left-footed strike from outside the area past a fully outstretched Carlo Cudicini into the bottom left corner to finish off a long run out of midfield by Nigel Reo-Coker.
• Teibert hit for his second and doubled Vancouver’s lead in the 76th minute, smashing home a ball teed up to him by Gershon Koffie in the box.
• The Galaxy pulled a goal back in the 86th minute through Gyasi Zardes, who headed home a Jose Villarreal cross from the right flank for his first MLS goal.
• But Whitecaps FC concluded the victory when Darren Mattocks pounced on a bouncing ball and prodded it home from close range in stoppage time.

The LA Galaxy saw their two-game winning streak come to an end, the Portland Timbers hitting for a late winner for a 2- 1 victory Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. The Galaxy are in a tie for fifth place in the Western Conference with 30 points from 19 matches.

• The Galaxy broke through first, in the 17th minute. Hector Jimenez perfectly placed a cross from the right wing and Marcelo Sarvas was left alone in the box to head home with ease.
• Portland answered back 10 minutes later. From a free kick just outside the Galaxy box, Diego Valeri took the restart quickly and fed a charging Darlington Nagbe, who rolled a cross to Ryan Johnson for an open-net goal.
• The game-winner came just before the final whistle when Andrew Jean-Baptiste powered his way into the box to get on the end of a Valeri corner kick.
• Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made no changes for a second successive match, keeping the team that got a pair of late goals for a 2-0 win against FC Dallas at StubHub Center.

• The Galaxy have allowed 15 goals after the 76th minute in league play, the most this season in MLS. They’ve now three times suffered defeats on goals scored in stoppage time, also losing games on goals scored in the 84th and 87th minutes, and conceded an 89th-minute equalizer. They also conceded four goals in the final quarter-hour in the CONCACAF Champions League.
• “I don't know if it's an issue [with this team],” goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini said. “Definitely, we have lost too many games like that, and it hurts. Everyone on this team is fighting hard to try to get, especially away from home, with three points. And today was a big example. We had a chance to come away in a difficult place with points, and we didn't.”
• Said Robbie Keane” “I can't explain it It's happened again. It's happened so many times this year, so certainly didn't expect it to happen again. Tonight we played well and certainly didn't deserve to lose the game, but the last kick of the game, same old story.”
• The Galaxy had their two-game winning streak put to an end in the loss in Portland, their second consecutive away loss.

  “It's inexcusable. It's been the story of our season giving away late goals all the way back to the Monterrey game giving up a late goal,” said defender Sean Franklin. “It's been a pattern for us and we have to be ok with getting one point. We expose ourselves, we give up a corner late and we don't do a job of defending on the set piece and they get a goal.”

• Marcelo Sarvas scored for a second consecutive match and the third time in the last four games, and increased his season total to four games, his high for his two MLS seasons.
• Keane came off in the 79th minute with a left hip injury, and missed training to start the week. Keane has missed eight games this season, one in March with a calf strain, four in April and May with a sprained left ankle, and three in March and June while with Ireland's national team.
• “I don't know [how bad it is], we'll have to see ...,” Keane said. “It's definitely a pull or something like that, because I tried to take off and just couldn't run.” Said Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena: “We'll see how he moves along this week.”

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS
Vancouver Whitecaps FC stretched their undefeated streak to six matches with a second consecutive victory, defeating the Chicago Fire 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at BC Place. Whitecaps FC sit in third place in the Western Conference with 32 points from 19 matches.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS' LAST MATCH

• The opening goal came on 66 minutes. Taking down a precision punt from goalkeeper Brad Knighton on the right hand side, Camilo turned defender Shaun Francis inside out in the area before firing past Fire goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi.
• Camilo claimed a second five minutes later. After Tornaghi stopped him one-on-one, Camilo gathered the rebound and cut back to fire home his league-leading 12th goal.
• Whitecaps FC made 3-0 in the in the 84th minute when rookie Kekuta Manneh got the better of Janil Anibaba one-on-one and blasted underneath Tornaghi from the left side of the area.
• Patrick Nyarko added a consolation goal for the Fire in the 94th minute, heading home a Joel Lindpere cross from the left side of the box after Maicon Santos had hit the post with a header of his own.
• Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made no changes to the team that defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0 at BC Place.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS TEAM NEWS

• Whitecaps FC remain the only team still undefeated at home in MLS play this season, after the win against the Fire. Whitecaps FC are 7-0-3 at BC Place.
• “That’s our seventh win in our last 10 games. We’ve picked up 23 points out of the last 30 on offer,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “There’s a lot of positives there; we move up the league with that result, we’ve looked at that as almost one of our games in hand and once again we’ve scored a lot of goals for our fans and they’ve backed us all the way again. It was a great afternoon for us and it sets us up for the next game.”

  Camilo Sanvezzo took over the leadership of the MLS Golden Boot standings with his 11th and 12th goals of the season. While Sanvezzo saw his five-game goalscoring streak come to an end the week before, he has still scored nine goals in the last seven games.

• “Camilo’s on a fantastic run, he’s the top scorer in MLS at the moment I believe and it makes a big difference to any team when your strikers are scoring,” said Rennie.
• The goal was the 100th in league play for Whitecaps FC since the club came into Major League Soccer.
• “I felt it was fitting that Camilo got the 100th goal for the club. I think that’s his (29th) out of the 100 so I think that’s fantastic from him and then for him to get another one right after that was fantastic,” Rennie said. Said Camilo: “It’s very important for me to be on the club history. And I hope to continue like that.”
• For a second consecutive match, goalkeeper Brad Knighton played a part in a goal, setting up Camilo’s opener.
• “It’s great. Coming to claim the ball and seeing Camilo one-v-one, it was just – put it up there and hope and pray – and Camilo did the rest,” Knighton said. “ ... To get shutouts, it’s what I’m here for. To keep the ball out of the net and it didn’t happen. It’s not good enough on our part. We’ve got to see the game out. 20 seconds from the last kick of the game and we let a goal in is not good enough.”
• Rookie Kekuta Manneh scored his second goal, his first since April 27, in sealing the victory.
• “He’s still 18 years old and he’s still young so we don’t want to overdo it but I think we want to give him experience, we want to give him minutes and we gave him I think about 30 minutes today so he got a good run at it and he rewarded us all with his performance,” said Rennie. “ ... When you’ve got players like [Darren] Mattocks and Kekuta to come off the bench, that’s a luxury that not many teams have and it’s exciting for us to be able to bring those guys on.”
