VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that striker Corey Hertzog will join FC Edmonton on loan for the remainder of the 2013 North American Soccer League (NASL) fall campaign. As per the loan agreement, Vancouver will have the option to recall Hertzog prior to Major League Soccer Roster Freeze Deadline of September 13, 2013.

“Corey is an exciting young player with a great work rate,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “He is at a stage in his development where he needs to receive regular playing minutes and the opportunity at FC Edmonton will provide that for Corey.”

Hertzog, 23, joined Whitecaps FC last January as a free agent. In seven MLS regular season appearances this season, the 6-foot striker has one goal and one assist. The Reading, Pennsylvania native also added a goal on a long distance strike against FC Edmonton in the second leg of this year’s Amway Canadian Championship semifinals. In MLS Reserve League action, Hertzog has scored two goals and added two assists in nine matches.

Prior to joining Whitecaps FC, Hertzog was drafted 13th overall by New York Red Bulls in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft after signing a Generation adidas contract. During his first two professional seasons, the striker made five first team appearances.

From 2008 to 2010, Hertzog played National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer for Penn State University. As a member of the Nittany Lions, the Reading, Pennsylvania, native scored 33 goals and recorded 14 assists in 61 matches. In 2010, his junior year, Hertzog led NCAA Division I in goals scored when he connected 20 times and was named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy – annual NCAA award present to the nation’s best college soccer player. In between his collegiate seasons, Hertzog played for Reading United A.C of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League, scoring four goals and recording one assist in 12 matches.
