- The Earthquakes took the lead in the 18th minute. Shea Salinas took possession and fed striker Alan Gordon, who knocked a first-time pass to Chris Wondolowski, who curled a cultured right-footed strike around Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Joe Cannon to the only available spot, high at the near post.
- The visitors took advantage of a bizarre circumstance to level terms in the 62nd minute. With two San Jose players on the sidelines changing their boots on a slick night, Corey Hertzog dragged a deflected Daigo Kobayashi shot to set himself up from nine yards out and fired home past San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC had their winless run extended to three games, reaching a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. Whitecaps FC sit in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with 33 points from 22 matches.

- Both goals came after the halftime break. Portland broke the stalemate in the 49th minute when Will Johnson converted a perfectly placed Diego Valeri cross with a clinical header to the top corner, beating Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted.
- Vancouver found an equalizer in the 69th minute on a Camilo Sanvezzo corner that Jordan Harvey flicked home with a header at the near post, as goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was not able to get enough purchase on the ball to deflect it away.
- Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made four changes to the team that lost 1-0 to Philadelphia Union at BC Place. David Ousted came in for Brad Knighton between the posts, and Carlyle Mitchell, Daigo Kobayashi and Kekuta Manneh all came into the side for Gershon Koffie, Kenny Miller and the suspended Jun Marques Davidson.

- The Whitecaps FC goal was the first scored from a corner kick this season. They scored three goals from corners in 2012, but only one was directly from the service – in a March 2012 game vs. Chivas USA.
- “We usually do set pieces right at the end [of training],” midfielder Matt Watson told Vancouver radio station TEAM 1410. “(W)e definitely haven’t scored too many from set pieces. We really wanted to take full advantage. During a game you always get corners and stuff like that. There’s no point in just putting it in there and hoping. We’ve got some structure to what we’re doing, and we’ve got a few different ones. We just put in one and it worked for us and that’s how it is sometimes.”
- Jordan Harvey scored his fourth goal of the season, by far his single-season career-high in eight MLS seasons. Harvey had scored two goals in his career before this season.
- “I think that he's an undervalued player sometimes. He's been doing very well defensively, but he's also been chipping in with goals. He was excellent on that corner; he attacked the ball really aggressively,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “I'm really pleased for him because he's the kind of player who quite often doesn't get a lot of credit, but I think within our team we value him very highly.”
- Goalkeeper David Ousted made his Whitecaps FC and MLS debut, in place of Brad Knighton, who had started between the posts in the previous 11 league matches.
- “I thought he did well. I thought he looked comfortable. I didn't think we had really any chances against us,” said Rennie. “They weren't really too dangerous tonight, so we didn't have too much to do, but I thought he looked very confident.”
- Kekuta Manneh made his first start in an MLS match since being named to the first XI for his professional debut in the season opener, March 2 vs. Toronto FC.
- Kenny Miller was held out of the match after suffering an adductor strain the weekend before vs. Philadelphia that forced him off early in the second half.
- Brad Rusin, who started in a holding midfield role instead of his nominal central defense spot, came off after just 17 minutes with a right ankle sprain and is likely to be unavailable for the weekend.
- “I know that we've got a lot of character. Tonight, we were missing seven players that would normally start, so we're very depleted, but the players didn't use that as an excuse,” said Rennie. “They dug in and they played well. A little disappointed in the game and the goal that we lost, but I felt that we were very comfortable in this game.”
- Camilo Sanvezzo contributed his first assist since June 19, when he also laid on a goal for Harvey.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
The San Jose Earthquakes made it three wins in a row with a 2-0 defeat of Chivas USA on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes sit in eighth place in the Western Conference with 30 points from 23 matches.

- The Quakes took the lead just before halftime. Steven Beitashour sent a long pass over the Chivas USA back line which Victor Bernardez floated into the area for Chris Wondolowski to head home from just outside the six-yard box.
- Wondolowski hit for his and San Jose's second in the 87th minute to seal the victory, pouncing on the rebound from a Shea Salinas deflected shot and lifting it over a prone Dan Kennedy in the Chivas goal.
- Quakes interim head coach Mark Watson made three changes to the team that defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Clarence Goodson came into central defense in place of Justin Morrow, Cordell Cato started in midfield for the suspended Marvin Chavez, and Chris Wondolowski returned from international duty in place of Adam Jahn.

- The Earthquakes three-game winning streak in their season-high, the first time this season they’ve won multiple games in a row.
- Chris Wondolowski scored a pair of goals, his first league goals since May 8 and his first multiple-goal game this season.
- “When we’re playing well, I can play well, because we create a lot of opportunities, a lot of chances,” Wondolowski said. “And that tends to ignite me a bit. . . . I think the way we’ve been playing can get us in [the playoffs]. That’s the great thing about this team, it’s not just one player who’s carrying us. It’s all 11 working for each other.”
- Wondolowski had missed the previous four league matches while on CONCACAF Gold Cup duty with the USA, where he scored five goals.
- “It was great for Wondo,” Quakes interim coach Mark Watson said. “He’s been away for a while and done really well with the national team, but I know he wanted to come back and make a contribution for us. And he did that very well tonight.”
- Clarence Goodson made his Earthquakes debut, his first MLS match since 2007, playing the full 90 minutes in central defense.
- “It was very encouraging. Clarence [Goodson] had worked with us for two days and that’s not a lot of time, especially for a back four,” said Watson. “Plus, Jordan [Stewart] is a fairly recent addition as well, so you hope they get that understanding and cohesiveness as soon as possible. I thought they had a very organized and assured performance.”
- Salvadoran international midfielder Jaime Alas also made his Earthquakes and MLS debut, coming in on the right of midfield for the final 13 minutes.
- “It’s a big difference from my last league, the Tippeligaen [in Norway], in terms of physicality and athleticism,” said Alas. “When I arrived in San Jose, I asked Marvin [Chavez] what to expect from this league and he told me about the competitive nature of the players. I felt that was on display tonight for both sides. I think my style of play can carry over well to Major League Soccer.”
- On Wednesday, the Earthquakes opened their CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 1-0 loss to the Montréal Impact at Stade Saputo. The game’s lone goal came through Hassoun Camara on 17 minutes.
