Teibert called up to Canadian men's national team for upcoming friendly against Australia

Russell Teibert - Canada Martinique

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that midfielder Russell Teibert has been called up to Canada’s 21-man squad for their upcoming international friendly against Australia.

The match will be played on October 15 at Craven Cottage in London, England – home of Fulham F.C. of the English Premier League.

“This camp and match against Australia will be important as we continue to work on establishing our team’s tactical structure,” said Canadian head coach Benito Floro, who held his first camp last month.

“With each camp we need to continue to build towards specific goals and maintain a certain quality of play. Australia is a strong opponent and will test our latest key learnings.”

Teibert will depart for international duty and October 10 and return on October 16, meaning he is not expected to miss any Major League Soccer action with Whitecaps FC.

The 20-year-old winger has earned five caps with the Canadian senior men’s national team after making his debut in August 2012. He last featured for the Red and White on September 8, playing the full 90 minutes in a scoreless draw with Mauritania.

The two-time Canadian U-17 Player of the Year also started all four of his appearances with the Canadian men’s U-23 side during their qualifying campaign for the 2012 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament.

A graduate of Whitecaps FC’s Residency program, Teibert has emerged into one of the team’s most consistent performers in his third season in MLS. The Niagara Falls, Ont. native has started 18 of his 20 appearances and leads the team with eight assists. He was also recently named 10th in the league's annual 24 under 24 series

Of note, former ‘Caps striker Marcus Haber and Residency graduate Adam Straith will also participate in the camp. All 21 players on the roster featured in the September camp and matches against Mauritania.

The Canadians last squared off against Australia during the 1993 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Canada was eliminated from FIFA World Cup Qualifiers after falling 1-4 to Australia on kicks from the penalty mark. After each home side won 2-1 in the home-and-away series, the last match went to extra time and then kicks from the penalty mark to decide a series winner.
