USSDA Winter Showcase Day 5: U-16s top off perfect week with 2-0 win over Players Development Academy

BRADENTON, FL – A pair of second-half goals lifted Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-16 Residency to a 2-0 win over Players Development Academy (PDA) Sunday in their final match of the 2013 United States Development Academy (USSDA) Winter Showcase.

The victory capped off a perfect tournament for the ‘Caps, who finished their Florida venture with an unblemished 3W-0L-0D record. Remarkably, it was the second straight year the Blue and White have gone undefeated at the showcase.

Rich Fagan’s side started the match in a 4-4-2 formation, but an injury to David Norman in the opening 10 minutes of the match forced the manager to bring on Daniel Sagno and shift the team into a 4-3-3.

Whitecaps FC broke through on the hour mark, when Aymar Sigue earned and successfully converted a penalty. It was the striker’s third goal of the week.

The ‘Caps doubled their lead only seven minutes later. In the build-up, Kadin Chung played a long diagonal pass into the path of Thomas Gardner and from there, the North Vancouver native made no mistake in smashing it past the PDA keeper.

At the other end of the pitch, Whitecaps FC’s defence was formidable again as goalkeeper Aidan Aylward retained his second consecutive clean sheet. Fagan said he was very pleased with the way his side performed throughout the week – outscoring their opponents by a 7-2 margin over the three matches.

The whole staff are so proud and pleased for every player – not only did they work their socks off for each other we played with confidence and self-belief,” Fagan told whitecapsfc.com. “Overall, I am very pleased with the effort and performance of each player.”
