Heart on his sleeve: Christian Dean talks tattoos

Christian Dean - University of California

VANCOUVER, BC – The contents of a tattoo say a lot about the individual wearing it.

Not only are tattoos an expression of art laid on the human canvas, they’re an expression of a person’s character, values, and identity.

To some, they also serve as an easy, permanent reminder of what’s important. And in Christian Dean’s case, there’s no doubting what’s at the top of the list.

Most of Dean’s tattoos, which can be seen on his left arm, revolve around his adoptive family. Born in Alvin, Texas, Dean was put up for adoption days after he was born – his biological mother simply did not have the financial means to support him.

It was an open adoption, however, and Dean is still close with his biological mother. At the same time, he's truly thankful for the life he's been given by his adoptive family – as evidenced by his sleeve of tattoos.

Among them, there are two for his adoptive mother, one for his entire adoptive family, and one for his adoptive grandmother, who passed away a few months ago.

Dean, who Vancouver Whitecaps FC selected at third overall in last week’s MLS SuperDraft, spoke to MLSsoccer.com before the draft about the tattoo he holds closest to his heart.
