'We know which players we want:' Whitecaps FC set for final two rounds of 2014 MLS SuperDraft

VANCOUVER, BC – The final two rounds of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft will take place on Tuesday morning and Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be front and centre with a total of three picks to their name.

Last week, Whitecaps FC picked up Generation adidas defender Christian Dean, midfielder Andre Lewis, and striker Mamadou Diouf with their first three SuperDraft selections. Many singled out Whitecaps FC as one of the big winners on draft day and they will be hoping for a similar result with their final three selections on Tuesday.

“We’re looking to bring in more good players,” Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson told reporters on Monday afternoon. “We know which players we want …. it’s the luck of the draw, really, if they get picked up before. If we’re able to get two or three of those guys, we’ll give them a chance in preseason and see what they can do.”

If players selected in the SuperDraft do not make Whitecaps FC’s roster, the club will still hold their MLS rights with the opportunity of signing them in the future. That said, the ‘Caps manager said he believes there are players to be had in the later rounds that could make an impact in Major League Soccer, referencing Real Salt Lake’s recent draft history as an example.

In 2012, RSL selected midfielder Sebastian Velasquez in the second round (36th overall) and in 2010, they acquired defender Chris Schuler in the third round (39th overall).

“If you do your homework, then you’ll be able to pick up a little gem here or there,” Robinson said.
