Whitecaps FC Residency teams play closely-contested matches against Seattle Sounders FC

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency teams faced a pair of tough results on Saturday against rivals Seattle Sounders FC. The U-18 squad fell 3-2 while the U-16 team played to a 2-2 draw.

Marco Bustos kept up his torrid scoring pace, but the 'Caps eventually fell 3-2 to rivals Seattle Sounders FC Academy. The 'Caps were behind after an early deficit before battling back valiantly.

“It’s interesting because it’s a younger group, but we were disappointed with our performance," Residency coach Steve Meadley told "Another day, we might’ve tied that game up, but that would’ve overshadowed the disappointing performance we had. We'll look to figure out what went wrong and build off of it for next week.”

A pair of first half goals from Seattle's David Olsen made it 2-0 at the break. Substitute Adeseyi Adekoya then made it 3-0 with 10 minutes to go.

But the Blue and White kept fighting. Bustos - who'd only just returned to the squad after making his first team debut against Toronto FC in the Amway Canadian Championship on Wednesday - got the 'Caps on the scoreboard in the last minute.

Down 3-1 in added time, Bustos added a second goal, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit. The goals were his team high 15th and 16th of the season. The young Canadian has now scored 11 goals in his last eight USSDA games played.

In addition to Bustos, the team also saw the return of defender Jackson Farmer who had been on loan to USL PRO affilate Charleston Battery. Joining Bustos and Farmer in returning from the Canadian Championship with the first team were goalkeeper Marco Carducci, defender Jordan Haynes, and midfielders Kianz Froese and Mitch Piraux.

While the U-18s faced an early deficit, the U-16s played with an early lead.

A penalty kick on 25 minutes was converted by leading scorer Dario Zanatta to give the 'Caps a 1-0 lead.

Then on 35 minutes, Daniel Sagno and Thomas Gardner did well on the counter attack to set-up Zanatta for a second goal on the day and a 2-0 lead. The goals were Zanatta's team leading 18th and 19th of the season in 21 games played. Only two players have scored more goals in the 78-team USSDA.

However the match took a turn on 58 minutes when defender Andre Baires was shown his second yellow card of the match and a subsequent red card.

Seattle took advantage of the man advantage, converting a cross from wide left on 70 minutes, then finishing a free kick on 78 minutes to turn the match into a 2-2 final score.

"Once again I felt the boys dominated the game in terms of possession and chances created," U-16 head coach Rich Fagan told "It's always tough to play with 10 men, especially against a team with as much quality as Seattle. But I felt with our performance that we deserved more."
