Preview: Whitecaps FC U-23 looking for fifth straight win Sunday against Sounders FC U-23

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 (4W-3L-3D) are back at home this weekend for a Cascadia derby with Seattle Sounders FC U-23 (4W-3L-1D) at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. PT.

The ‘Caps, who are riding a four-game winning streak, currently occupy third place in the Western Conference, Northwest Division – with Sounders FC positioned just two points below them.

“The squad didn't have a good performance last time we met with Sounders FC,” Whitecaps FC U-23 head coach Niall Thompson told whitecapsfc.com. “Seattle’s U-23 squad has had a good run of results lately, and so have we. Sessions have been intense and the attitude has been excellent. We’re really focused.”

June has been very kind to Whitecaps FC U-23, who will have Major League Soccer players Sam Adekugbe and Bryce Alderson at their disposal on Sunday, and they will be hoping to keep things rolling in their final match of the month.

After going winless in their first six matches of the season, the ‘Caps have won four straight games in the month of June, outscoring their opponents 14-2 in the process. In fact, their last loss game at the hands of these very Sounders back on May 30.

Most recently, Vancouver defeated Puget Sound 5-0 on June 20 in Washington. With two more goals in that game, Cody Cook now leads Whitecaps FC U-23 with six goals in nine games.

The Sounders, who are in action Saturday night against Victoria, also enter Sunday’s contest in good form, having lost just one of their last six games.

Their most recent outing was a 4-0 win over Lane United on June 20. That was Seattle’s third clean sheet of the season. Only one team in the Western Conference, Northwest Division has conceded fewer goals (9) in 2014.

The fourth-place Sounders trail third-place Vancouver by just two points and they also have a pair of games in hand.

Whitecaps FC U-23 have an all-time 4W-6L-3D record against their Cascadia foes. Their most recent meeting was a 3-0 road loss back on May 30.

Next week is going to be a busy one for Whitecaps FC U-23, who host Washington Crossfire on Tuesday, July 1 (3 p.m. kickoff at Minoru Oval Park) and Lane United on Friday, July 4 (7 p.m. kickoff at UBC Thunderbird Stadium). Their regular season finale is set for July 8 against Lane United.
