Sampson shows 'no fear' in his MLS debut

VANCOUVER, BC – Ethen Sampson made his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday at BC Place, and in head coach Carl Robinson’s words, the young South African showed “no fear.”

The 20-year-old right back made four tackles in the first half, which was more than any other player, including a few of the spectacular variety.

“I thought he was excellent in his debut,” Robinson told reporters. “I said beware of his first tackle. I think he showed what he’s about. He’s competitive and I want players like that on my squad … where it means everything to play for the Vancouver Whitecaps.”

Sampson, who was subbed off in the 54th minute after doing down with a cramp, grew up in Mitchell’s Plain – a crime-ridden township in the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.

Here’s a story from March on how soccer helped save Sampson’s life and how he’s hoping it will do the same for his family. And see below for some GIFs from Sampson’s debut.
