VANCOUVER, BC– Vancouver Whitecaps FC will begin their defence of the Voyageurs Cup on Wednesday, June 1.
Canada Soccer announced on Friday the schedule for the 2016 Amway Canadian Championship – a day after the release of the MLS regular season schedule.
The ‘Caps will once again be the tournament’s top seed after finishing with the most regular season points among the three Canadian MLS teams in 2015. Whitecaps FC will open the competition in the semifinals, taking on the winner of the preliminary round series between North American Soccer League (NASL) sides FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury FC.
The first leg of the semifinals will be played on Wednesday, June 1 on the road against the Edmonton/Ottawa winner. The second leg will be at BC Place on Wednesday, June 8.
Should Whitecaps FC advance to the final, they would face either Montreal Impact or Toronto FC on the road in the first leg on Tuesday, June 21 or Wednesday, June 22. Then, the 'Caps would host the decisive second leg on Tuesday, June 28 or Wednesday, June 29 at BC Place.
The Amway Canadian Championship is a five-team tournament that crowns the top team in Canada. In addition to qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League, the winner also takes home the supporters-created Voyageurs Cup (which was first awarded in 2002).
Last year, the ‘Caps won their first-ever Voyageurs Cup after 13 years of heartbreak, defeating Montreal 4-2 on aggregate in the tournament final.
All of Vancouver's Canadian Championship matches are included in 'Caps Club Season Ticket memberships. Single match tickets for the semifinal second leg will go on sale on Thursday, February 18 at 10 a.m. PT.
