VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Monday that the club has signed midfielder Deybi Flores to a multi-year contract after finalizing his transfer from Honduran side Club Deportivo Motagua. Flores was originally acquired by Whitecaps FC on a one-year loan from CD Motagua in February. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  • Earned his first senior international call-up to Honduras for friendly versus Cuba in December
  • Played full 90 minutes in all three matches for Honduras at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup

“Deybi showed flashes of promise in his first year in MLS,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “He has the tools to become a regular contributor on both ends of the pitch. We expect him to continue to grow and improve, and we're pleased to have him at the club.”

The 19-year old Flores finished his first year in Vancouver with 11 starts in 15 first team appearances across all competitions, including two Amway Canadian Championship matches and all four CONCACAF Champions League fixtures. In addition, Flores spent time with Whitecaps FC 2, starting in all three of his appearances in the United Soccer League.

The San Pedro Sula native earned his first senior international call-up on December 16, playing 22 minutes for Honduras in their 2-0 friendly win versus Cuba at Estadio Juan Ramón Brevé Vargas in Juticalpa.

The 5-foot-11 midfielder also saw international action in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand this past May and June, where he played the full 90 minutes in all three matches for Los Catrachos. He helped Honduras qualify for the tournament when they finished second in Group B of the 2015 U-20 CONCACAF Championship, where Flores started all five of his tournament appearances, playing all 450 minutes of action.

Prior to joining Whitecaps FC last February, Flores started 16 of his 21 appearances in his two years with CD Motagua. During that time, he helped the Tegucigalpa club claim the Honduran Liga Nacional championship during the 2014-15 Apertura season, starting nine of his 12 appearances.
