Pundit for a day: 'Caps head coach Carl Robinson appears on TSN's Euro panel

Carl Robinson on TSN panel with Jason deVos

TORONTO, ONT – Turns out Carl Robinson may have a future in TV one day.

No, your eyes weren’t deceiving with you. With Vancouver Whitecaps FC staying in Toronto for a few days ahead of this weekend’s visit to Philadelphia Union, the ‘Caps manager joined Jason deVos and Luke Wileman on TSN’s Euro 2016 panel for today’s final matches of the group stage.

And he fit in seamlessly.

He was even wearing a suit, not a sweater – to the surprise of many Twitter commenters.

In the first two matches of the day, Iceland defeated Austria 2-1 and Hungary played to a thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal. All three teams advanced to the Round of 16, but Hungary and Iceland finished first and second in the group thanks to today’s results.

“Wow, what a day,” Robinson said on TSN. “Fantastic achievement for Hungary and Iceland. Disappointment a little bit for Portugal. Austria have let themselves down in this tournament. They were dark horses. But let’s talk about the positives. Those two countries should be so, so proud of themselves. The dynamics of the round of 16 games change now.”

Robinson also had plenty of praise for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I don’t think he should get criticism for his performance today,” Robinson said. “Yes, he showed a little bit of frustration, but he also showed an energy towards his team. He created the first goal, he scored the second two, and he could have three or four. And I was disappointed he didn’t score a hat-trick because I called it at the start.”

“I think we had the full Ronaldo on show today,” Robinson continued. “Everything. The good, the bad, the ugly, whatever you want to call it. But he’s paid to score goals. He got criticized in the first two games for not scoring goals. Today he stepped up with two goals and an assist and should have scored more.”
