On Wednesday, June 29 at BC Place, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC will play for the Voyageurs Cup. It will be the 21st all-time meeting between the two clubs dating back to 2008.
There have been many memorable moments along the way.
Here are five of our favourites:
5. JULY 1, 2008: ‘CAPS PULL OFF UPSET IN FIRST-EVER MEETING
It was a Canada Day upset at BMO Field.
In the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Martin Nash scored a first-half penalty and goalkeeper Jay Nolly stood tall with some second-half heroics as the second-division ‘Caps came away with a 1-0 victory over the favoured-MLS side in Canadian Championship play.
4. MAY 14, 2016: SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER AT BMO FIELD
This one should be fresh in your memory.
Just last month, the ‘Caps beat TFC in a thrilling 4-3 win at BMO Field – their first road victory against Toronto FC since the aforementioned Canadian Championship fixture.
Kekuta Manneh led the way with a mesmerizing two-goal, one assist performance.
3. JUNE 2, 2009: THE TOURE SHOW AT SWANGARD
Liberian forward Ansu Toure scored twice to lead Whitecaps FC to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC at Swangard Stadium. It was Vancouver’s first-ever home win over the Reds and it appeared to put them in a great spot to win their first-ever Voyageurs Cup.
Not so fast.
Toronto FC, who needed to beat Montreal by at least four goals in their final match to emerge as champions, ended up winning 6-1 – much to the chagrin of the ‘Caps and their supporters.
2. MAY 16, 2012: HASSLI WONDER GOAL
This speaks for itself.
1. MARCH 19, 2011: INAUGURAL MLS MATCH
It was a dream debut for Whitecaps FC in MLS, as Eric Hassli scored twice in a thrilling 4-2 win over Toronto FC at Empire Field. Terry Dunfield and Atiba Harris also found the back of the net.
“We couldn't have asked for a better start to our life in MLS," said then-Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. “We scored four goals and created a lot of chances. We could have possibly scored some more goals, but to win 4-2 in our very first MLS game is a dream come true.”
