Canada's women's national team made history on Tuesday, winning their first ever match against world second ranked Germany to earn their third consecutive victory and top Group F with nine points. Former Whitecaps FC women's player Melissa Tancredi played the hero with both goals in the 2-1 victory.
The Red and White now advance to the quarterfinals will they will face France on Friday.
Canada had never earned a result against Germany, not a win or draw. That didn't look to change early on when the Germans went ahead on a 13th minute penalty kick.

But the Canadians would not be deterred.
On 25 minutes, Tancredi found an equalizer with a low strike to make it 1-1.

And they weren't done there.
In the 60th minute Tancredi struck again, this time on a header from a long free kick.

Tense moments came as the Canadians defended their lead, but they persevered and held on for a memorable victory.

The quarterfinal match for Canada will take place on Friday at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. PT.
