Waston called up to Costa Rica for upcoming Asian friendlies tour

Waston call-up - Costa Rica

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed on Tuesday that captain Kendall Waston has been called up to the Costa Rican men’s national team for an Asian friendlies tour during the upcoming FIFA international break. UPDATE: Waston will not participate in the upcoming tour after feeling tightness in his left adductor in Vancouver's 2-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, September 1. Waston, who is listed as day-to-day, will remain in Vancouver to recover and rehab.

The Ticos see their first action since the 2018 FIFA World Cup when they visit South Korea at Goyang Stadium on September 7, and then Japan at Suita City Football Stadium four days later. Waston will not miss any matches for Whitecaps FC during this span.

Waston headed in a goal for Costa Rica in their last match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a 2-2 draw against Switzerland in Nizhniy Novgorod Stadium on June 27. The goal, his fourth in international competition, made the 30-year-old centre back the first active ‘Caps player to score in the World Cup.

Waston has 28 caps for Costa Rica since making his senior international debut in 2013.
