Whitecaps FC announce launch of Phillips Brewing Village Hero craft beer to help Greater Vancouver Food Bank

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Friday their collaboration with official beer partner Phillips Brewing & Malting Co. to create Village Hero, a limited-edition craft beer that pays homage to our frontline heroes. One hundred per cent of the proceeds from every beer sold will be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Village Hero was inspired by the club’s It Takes A Village art pieces by internationally recognized local artist Carson Ting and the successful fundraising initiative for the food bank launched on May 1. The original artwork is the beer’s collector-item label, commemorating Vancouver’s 7 p.m. ovation for healthcare workers, emergency responders, city employees, store clerks, supply chain workers, and all who have been serving the community during the pandemic.

“We are so excited to be able to help out and bring beer to the party that the Whitecaps and Carson Ting have started with the It Takes a Village project,” said Matt Phillips, owner of Phillips Brewing. “The Village Hero craft brew is bright, crisp and refreshing. It has all the hops and flavour of an IPA but all the lightness and drinkability of a blonde ale or an American wheat ale. Cheers to the frontline heroes working to keep us safe.”

“We are so proud of our partners at Phillips Brewing. This organization personifies the community spirit of Vancouver; from creating PPE and hand sanitizer as this pandemic unfolded to helping our city salute our frontline heroes and feeding our most vulnerable citizens. It's so inspiring,” added Mark Pannes, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer. “To build upon the incredible piece by Carson Ting and produce this limited-edition craft beer to support the food bank shows how innovative and engaged they are.”

“It's been an amazing experience working with Whitecaps FC, Phillips Brewing, and fellow creatives to do good for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank,” said Ting. “I hope this artwork serves as a reminder of the unity, cheer, and hope that came from Vancouver despite these times. To all the frontline workers, this is for you.”

In addition to Village Hero, Phillips has already launched several initiatives to support communities during the pandemic. The company has been collaborating with the engineering departments from the University of Victoria and Camosun College to build protective face masks using the brewery’s Prusa 3-D printer.

Phillips also launched a program to produce hand sanitizer for distribution to hospitals and other places in need. Taking back beer kegs from its partner pubs and restaurants, they used the beer to produce the sanitizer and the kegs to store and transport it. When partner pubs reopen their doors, Phillips will replace the kegs with full ones.

Village Hero beer can be purchased at select private liquor stores, subject to availability and delivery schedules.
