There are only two months to go until WFC2 kick off their second USL season, and today their complete 2016 schedule was announced.
Head coach Alan Koch and his team will play 15 home matches this year. Below are three that you won’t want to miss.
HOME OPENER – SUNDAY, APRIL 10 VS. SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC
A look back at the 2015 WFC2 home opener
It’s the home opener, so you can bet that the energy on the field will be high and the atmosphere in the stands will be abuzz. Last year 3,208 fans packed Thunderbird Stadium to watch WFC2 take on Toronto FC II.
This year’s home opening opponent is no slouch either. Sacramento Republic FC enter their third season in the USL having already won a championship – the 2014 USL title. The club has ambitions to join MLS, and they back it up with a rabid fan base that regularly sells out their 11,442 home at Bonney Field. Don't be surprised to see a few Sacramento fans make the trip to Vancouver.
BEST OF THE WEST – SUNDAY, MAY 15 VS. LA GALAXY II
2015 USL Championship highlights
Like their MLS counterparts, LA Galaxy II have set a high standard in their first two USL seasons. Los Dos made the Western Conference championship in their inaugural 2014 season, and then took things a step further by making the USL final in 2015. The Galaxy were a minute away from winning the USL title before they fell 2-1 in extra time to Rochester Rhinos, so expect the team to be hungry again this season.
Like Vancouver, the Galaxy have created a very strong academy program. That has included players on their MLS team like Gyasi Zardes and Jose Villareal. The next wave of Galaxy stars are playing on this team, making this match a great early season test for the young talent at Whitecaps FC.
SEASON FINALE – SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 VS. PORTLAND TIMBERS 2
WFC2 win a wild one over Portland at Thunderbird
The ‘Caps first team aren’t the only ones ending their season against Portland. WFC2 will wrap-up both their USL regular season schedule and their slate of Cascadia matches against Timbers 2 on September 18.
Matches between these two teams in 2015 brought great entertainment, including 3-2 and 2-1 wins for the ‘Caps at Thunderbird Stadium. With this being the final match of the year, both sides may also be making a last effort to secure one of eight playoff spots in the Western Conference in 2016.
This year, every Tier 1 ‘Caps Club MLS membership includes three open tickets to WFC2 matches. More information on how to select your WFC2 matches will be sent out with your Tier 1 MLS membership packages. All ‘Caps Club Members can upgrade to the full WFC2 season for only $7 per month over 12 months, while Youth can get WFC2 season tickets for $2 per match.
Tier 2 season ticket memberships are also now available, while single match and group tickets will be available in March. For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 604-484-7862.
