WFC2 win 2-0 over UBC in first preseason match

VANCOUVER, BC – In the first preseason match for Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2), the ‘Caps earned a 2-0 victory over UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium.

On a wet evening, WFC2 head coach Alan Koch had the opportunity to evaluate a number of players. A few experiences players also had a run with the squad – Pa-Modou Kah, Christian Bolaños, Blas Perez, and Erik Hurtado.

The first goal of the evening came on 33 minutes, on a lovely play starting with a pair of youngsters and ending with a pair of veterans. Brett Levis, starting at left back, broke up the flank and lobbed a ball down the wing to teenager Alphonso Davies. The youngster then spun and fed Perez in the middle, who then found Bolaños breaking in from the opposite wing. The Costa Rican made no mistake, slotting low to the far post for a 1-0 lead.

A number of substitutions were made at halftime, and it didn’t take long for the ‘Caps to double their advantage. Just over a minute after the restart, Ghanaian midfielder Fatawu Safiu fired a laser into the bottom corner for a 2-0 advantage. It was a familiar sight for ‘Caps fans, as Safiu scored two long distance strikes against WFC2 while playing with Portland Timbers 2 last season.

Both sides pushed for more, but in the end it was a comfortable victory for WFC2.

Koch’s side return to preseason action on Thursday when they face Trinity Western University at 11 a.m. at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. Find the complete WFC2 preseason schedule below.
