WFC2 win 5-0 over Trinity Western in second preseason match

VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 continued their preseason preparations on Thursday with a 5-0 victory over Trinity Western University. 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Christopher Hellmann and Canadian striker Daniel Haber each scored two goals in the victory.

Head coach Alan Koch had a number of players make their first starts of preseason, including outside backs Jordan Haynes and Chris Serban, wingers Victor Blasco and Fatawu Safiu, centre midfielder Will Seymore, and strikers Haber and Hellmann. Three players who also started last weekend in the win over UBC were also in the lineup – goalkeeper Sean Melvin, centre back Sem de Wit, and centre midfielder Giuliano Frano. U-18 Residency centre back Vana Markarian rounded out the lineup.

It took 10 minutes for the ‘Caps to score first. A ball forward from Markarian was flicked beautifully by Blasco to Haynes down the left flank. The Residency grad then crossed into Hellmann, who took a quick touch before firing it into the net for 1-0.

Ten minutes later, the goals came fast and furious. First Blasco earned a penalty kick, finished by Haber. Then Hellmann capitalized on a loose ball in the box. Finally, Blasco broke down the left touchline before feeding Haber for a tap in.

The second half saw one more goal, an own goal, to cap the scoring at 5-0.

“Another good exercise today and a step in the right direction,” said WFC2 head coach Alan Koch. “I thought our starting group came out and tried to play the way that we want to play. We made some mistakes, but we’re taking the risks that we want to take in possession and we scored some good goals. But give Trinity credit, they didn’t quit and played hard for the full 90 minutes, which is exactly what we needed.”
