BURNABY, BC - This past weekend, a collection of players assembled at Simon Fraser University Fox Field for the 2016 WFC2 Open Tryout presented by adidas.
In the end, the coaching staff selected Oriol Torres to join WFC2 preseason. Torres (pictured above) is an attacking player who played at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops after moving to Canada from Barcelona in 2010.
The Spanish-born Torres was part of a diverse group at the tryout. In addition to the many local players who attended, there were also entrants from countries such as Botswana, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Iran, Nigeria, the Republic of Korea, and the United States.
“It’s awesome to see different people with different nationalities come together,” said goalkeeper Brandon Chacon, living in Vancouver but originally from El Salvador.
Two tough days ended with a final full-field evaluation match on Sunday. While every player aspired to be selected, each will take away a valuable experience in their development.
“I think every player always has the dream of playing professional football,” said head coach Alan Koch. “But as a player, it’s tough to know what level you need to play at to get there. Today was a good lesson in terms of what they need to do as players to improve. You need that hunger to succeed, and I’m sure many of these players will continue to push themselves to reach higher levels.”
“It was great,” added Ingo Ionescu, currently studying at the University of Calgary. “From this experience I can take away an expectation of where you need to be as a player to compete at a professional level.”
For Torres, he will now have a chance to be assessed with WFC2. He's looking forward to learning from coach Koch.
"He's a fantastic coach," said Torres. "It's the first open tryout I've been to and it was awesome."
Now, the hard work continues.
