WFC2 win 3-0 in preseason friendly against the University of Washington

BURNABY, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) played their third match of preseason on Sunday, winning 3-0 over the University of Washington at Simon Fraser University’s Fox Field. Newcomer Kyle Greig scored all three goals for the ‘Caps.

The first goal of the day came 15 minutes into the match after Victor Blasco made a long run down the left flank and was taken down in the box. Greig stepped up and buried the penalty kick for his first goal of preseason and an early 1-0 advantage.

Five minutes later the ‘Caps scored again, and it was the same two players who combined to make it happen. Blasco received the ball and cut into the middle of the park and fired a strike on goal. The Huskies goalkeeper made the save but spilled the rebound, and Greig was there to tap it home for his second of the day.

One more goal came, and once more it was Blasco and Greig at the forefront. This time the Spaniard got on the ball in the centre of the box, but before he could take a shot he was clipped from behind. Greig stepped up and slotted home a second penalty kick for the final tally.

The second half saw a number of substitutes as the ‘Caps lineup was filled with members of the club’s U-18 Residency team. The young teenagers moved the ball well, keeping the majority of possession on the way to a clean sheet and 3-0 victory.

After the match, head coach Alan Koch was pleased with the effort but cautioned that more work is needed before the start of the USL season on March 26.

“We need as many games as we can before we start,” said Koch. “We’re not yet ready for the season, but we’re showing promising signs. We’ve obviously included a number of young players. At the end of the game, almost every one of our players was a teenager. It was a good exercise for us as a group, while it also showed a couple things that we need to work on before we start the season.”

WFC2 play their next preseason match on Sunday, March 6 at 10:30 a.m. PT at SFU Fox Field against Canadian rivals Toronto FC II.
