Whitecaps FC 2 earn scoreless draw versus Simon Fraser University to stay undefeated in preseason

BURNABY, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 battled Simon Fraser University Clan to a scoreless draw on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon at SFU Fox Field to stay undefeated in the preseason with a 4W-0L-2D record.

Head coach Alan Koch, who previously spent seven years at the helm for SFU before joining WFC2 at the beginning of 2015, fielded a starting lineup featuring seven Canadians and four Residency products.

The first half was a defensive affair, with 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Cole Seiler and right back Chris Serban standing tall against the home side.

The best chance of the half came right before intermission when striker Daniel Haber got behind the Clan defence on a breakaway but was unable to capitalize.

It was more of the same after halftime, as neither side was able to solve the opposing defence. Clan midfielder Mamadi Camara threatened in the 78th minute with a crafty run up the left flank, but Sean Melvin was there to smother the attempt.

Defender Elliot Green, who came on as a halftime substitute for the ‘Caps, provided an all-important clearance in the dying minutes when the Clan made a late push.

Melvin and SFU goalkeeper Brandon Watson earned the clean sheets for their respective sides in the scoreless affair.

WFC2 have two preseason fixtures left on their schedule before opening the 2016 USL season on Saturday, March 26 on the road against Orange County Blues FC.

The team hosts their home opener on Sunday, April 10 at Thunderbird Stadium against Sacramento Republic FC. Ticket information is available at
