WFC2 earn 2-1 preseason victory over Cascadia rivals Sounders FC 2

BURNABY, BC  On a sunny afternoon at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex, Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) maintained their undefeated preseason with a 2-1 win over USL rivals Seattle Sounders FC 2.

Head coach Alan Koch had eight MLS players featured in his lineup, and four Canadians.

The first half was full of excitement as both teams had numerous scoring chances. Daniel Haber opened up the scoring for the ‘Caps nine minutes in off a low cross in the box from right back Jordan Smith.

The one goal lead did not prevent the visiting S2 from playing high up the pitch and continuing to apply pressure on the defensive line.

Midway through the first half, Kianze Froese was forced to step off the pitch with a cut to his head. During the time the 'Caps were shorthanded, Seattle capitalized on a WFC2 turnover in their own box as Emir Alihodzic scored to draw the match level at 1-1.

Froese was forced out of the match shortly after and was replaced by Thomas Gardner.

Despite spotting a goal to Seattle, WFC2 maintained steady pressure and pulled ahead minutes before halftime. Sam Adekugbe played a great ball forward from left back, which Nicolas Mezquida flicked forward to Victor Blasco. The Spaniard then slotted a low shot in to put the 'Caps up 2-1.

After 45 minutes of play, Jordan Haynes replaced Adekugbe, Jackson Farmer came in for Cole Seiler, and Thomas Sanner came in for Mezquida. Sanner is back with the club during spring break as he finishes his university classes at Princeton.

The remainder of the match provided both teams with excellent scoring opportunities, however neither team were able to capitalize with a second half goal.

The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 win for WFC2.

“I think every preseason game [we’re going to try] different things," said WFC2 head coach Alan Koch after the match. "Today we had a number of first team players come down and get minutes, so it was useful from that perspective. [There was] good value for some of our players in playing with the first team and to mesh them as a group because that’s what happens during the season."

WFC2 play their final preseason match this coming Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. PT at SFU Fox Field. The USL 'Caps then kick off their season on Saturday, March 26 with a road match at Orange County Blues FC. WFC2 host their home opener on Sunday, April 10 against Sacramento Republic FC at Thunderbird Stadium.
