WFC2 complete undefeated preseason with 2-1 comeback win over Oregon State

BURNABY, BC – Bring on the real thing.

Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) completed their undefeated preseason with a 2-1 comeback win over the Oregon State University Beavers on Saturday afternoon at SFU – a week ahead of their 2016 United Soccer League regular season opener.

“I think it’s the first time we’ve been down in the preseason, and I’m glad we were down because it’s going to happen at some stage during the regular season,” said WFC2 head coach Alan Koch. “From an exercise perspective, it’s actually what we wanted. Oregon gave us a good game, but full credit to the guys. You could see they wanted to win and they did what it took to get the result.”

Canadian striker Daniel Haber scored both goals for WFC2, bringing his preseason total to six.

After going down in the 14th minute courtesy of a Timmy Mueller headed free kick, Haber scored twice after the break with a pair of tidy finishes on throughballs from Fatawu Safiu and Mitch Piraux, including a 90th-minute winner.

“You can see Fatawu is a winner,” Koch said. “He knows this is a friendly, but he wants to win the game. And you can see a little bit of class from Daniel Haber to score the two goals. “

Haber nearly completed the hat-trick in stoppage time, but he was denied on a breakaway by Whitecaps FC Residency graduate Nolan Wirth. The Canadian keeper came up big for Oregon State throughout the match, but WFC2 still managed to break through in the end.

The young ‘Caps conclude the preseason with a 6W-0L-2D record.

“We’ve played some professional teams, we’ve played some good college teams,” Koch added. “We obviously set it out a certain way so all the guys got an opportunity. I think we have a good idea of what the group is capable of. The friendlies were great, but we’re excited now to go play for three points.”

WFC2 open the regular season next Saturday, March 26 at Orange County Blues FC. Watch the match live on whitecapsfc2.com at 7 p.m. PT. Koch’s side then visit Portland Timbers 2 on April 2 before hosting Sacramento Republic FC on April 10 at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
