TOUGH ON THEIR OWN TURF: WHAT THE ‘CAPS FACE IN SWITCHBACKS FC

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC are coming off a tough week, with a 1-1 draw against Swope Park Rangers mid-week, and a marginal 2-1 loss to Saint Louis FC on Saturday. Yet, Colorado has a formidable record at home, with just one loss in nine home matches this season, and just three goals against at Switchbacks Stadium.

On the other hand, Colorado Springs’ low goal-scoring trend might be something for the ‘Caps to capitalize on given their own ability to score on the road. To date, WFC2 have scored 17 goals away from Thunderbird Stadium.

The 'Caps high-scoring attack led by Kyle Greig (10 goals, third in USL), Daniel Haber (five goals, three assists), Fatawu Safiu (three goals, three assists), and newest member Thomas Sanner, who was named to the USL Team of the Week after scoring last week's game-winner.

What’s more, WFC2 are coming off a win against another big name in the Western Conference. With that comes confidence, and an ambition to get a win streak going.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Leading the 'Caps offence is Haber, who has shown a knack for the dramatic. Having lined up for head coach Alan Koch up front and also on either wing, the 24-year-old Toronto native has churned out three late game-winners this year, twice as a scorer, and last week as the setup man. Last Sunday's came in the form of perfectly timed and carved cross in added time that led to Sanner's header.

One of the players tasked to mark Haber? Six-foot-tall Switchbacks FC centre back JJ Greer. A regular starter throughout June, Greer has been working his way back up in minutes this month. Playing his first full 90 for the side since June 29 in the 1-0 win over Sacramento Republic FC nine days ago, Greer earned a USL Team of the Week selection for his match-winning goal.

Both players have been recurring selections for their respective teams this season, making a name for themselves in their respective positions. And both will be looking to help their side to a win should they get the nod from their coaches tonight.

Another player to keep an eye on is gritty midfielder Will Seymore, who makes his appearance in his native city of Colorado Springs as a member of Whitecaps FC 2. Incidentally, the former FC Dallas MLS SuperDraft selection made his WFC2 debut against Switchbacks FC last season.

Following the match, WFC2 travel south to face Arizona United SC on Wednesday, August 3. This will be the first match up between the two sides this season.

Whitecaps FC 2 then return home to face Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Thunderbird Stadium. Last time the two sides met, Seattle took a narrow 3-2 win over the ‘Caps. With the upper hand at home this time, can WFC2 secure three points against Sounders 2? Come on down to UBC and find out!
