Whitecaps FC call up four WFC2 players for CONCACAF Champions League opener

COUVA, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that the club has signed four Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) players to short-term agreements ahead of their 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League opener versus Central FC tonight (5 p.m. PT at Ato Boldon Stadium - online broadcast

Joining the first team for the match are USL goalkeeper Spencer Richey, centre back Sem de Wit, left back Brett Levis, and forward Kyle Greig. This marks Richey's first call-up to the first team, while de Wit, Levis, and Greig rejoin the roster after each made their debut on July 19, coming on as second-half substitutes in the 'Caps international friendly versus Crystal Palace FC at BC Place.

Richey, 24, leads Whitecaps FC 2 goalkeepers in starts with 10, and is coming off a record-setting nine-save performance on Friday evening. The 2015 MLS SuperDraft selection, who has three clean sheets in his young professional career, participated in the first team preseason camp in February, playing 45 shutout minutes against Portland Timbers in the 2016 Simple Invitational.

De Wit, 21, has been a consistent presence on WFC2 head coach Alan Koch's defence this year, starting 19 of their 20 matches in the middle. The Dutch centre back, who played 29 minutes against Crystal Palace in his first-team debut, was selected to the USL Team of the Week after just his third outing for the young 'Caps earlier this season.

Levis, 23, has four goals and two assists so far for WFC2 in 2016, his second year on the team. The Saskatoon native, who scored the equalizer versus Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Friday, impressed in the second half against the English Premier League side two weeks ago, assisting on Kendall Waston's 78th-minute equalizer.

Greig, 26, leads WFC2 with 10 goals, good for third in the USL, in addition to one assist. Serving as captain, the striker from Olathe, Kansas has started in 17 of his 19 appearances this season, his fourth in USL.

MLS clubs may sign players from their USL affiliate to short-term agreements (up to four-day contracts) for CONCACAF Champions League, Amway Canadian Championship, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and exhibition matches. An MLS club may sign a player to a maximum of four short-term agreements each season (maximum of 16 days).

TRANSACTION: Whitecaps FC sign goalkeeper Spencer Richey, centre back Sem de Wit, left back Brett Levis, and forward Kyle Greig to short-term agreements on Tuesday, August 2, 2016.
