SACRAMENTO, CA – Whitecaps FC 2 came away with a hard-earned road point against first-place Sacramento Republic FC as the two sides battled to a scoreless draw at Bonney Field on Saturday evening.
WFC2 goalkeeper Spencer Richey collected two saves en route to his first clean sheet of the season.
Featuring a backline with recently named player/coach Pa-Modou Kah and brand-new first-teamer Brett Levis, the ‘Caps weathered an early storm from the Republic FC attack, as Richey dove left to stop a short-distance shot from Jeffrey Koval in the 20th minute. Cameron Iwasa would come inches from opening the score twice for the home side, with his stab attempt bouncing off the post, and a tough-angle blast from the left skimming over the crossbar in the 38th minute.
The WFC2 attack came to life in the second half as Daniel Haber manufactured chances both for himself and his teammates. In the 59th minute, the heady Ontario native dispossessed Republic FC goalkeeper Evan Newton and fed a trailing Marco Bustos, but the defence was quick to recover.
English striker Carlton Cole, who played 10 years for British Premier League side West Ham United FC, came on as a substitute in his USL debut and had a glorious opportunity for a winner in the 88th minute, but Richey met him inside the six-yard box to stuff the chance.
Defenders Cole Seiler and Sem de Wit contributed timely stops to help the ‘Caps end Sacramento’s three-game winning streak.
With the result, Republic FC sit atop the table with 44 points, with the ‘Caps just three points behind at third place.
WFC2 play their final road match of the season when they visit rival Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Friday, September 2 for the front end of a home-and-away series. They are back on home soil on Labour Day Monday, September 5 for the Cascadia rematch with S2 at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. Tickets are available here.
