Whitecaps FC sign New Zealand striker Myer Bevan to USL contract

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Monday that the club has signed striker Myer Bevan to a United Soccer League (USL) contract with Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2), pending receipt of his Canadian work permit. Bevan was acquired prior to the close of the international transfer window and has now been added to the roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC). He is expected to join the team following the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea from May 20 to June 11.

“Myer is a modern striker with good height, balance, pace, and intelligent movement,” noted WFC2 head coach Rich Fagan. “He is strong with both feet and can play as a lone striker or in a tandem. He is also willing to work incredibly hard for the team defensively. We are excited to work with Myer and look forward to helping him reach his potential.”

WFC2 striker Myer Bevan
  • Native of Auckland, New Zealand
  • Member of New Zealand U-20 national team set to play at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup
  • Formerly played for the Nike Football Academy in England
  • Made his professional debut with hometown club Auckland City FC
Bevan, 20, joins WFC2 from the Nike Football Academy, a full-time professional-level training program out of St George’s Park, the English FA national football centre in the United Kingdom. The Auckland, New Zealand native earned a spot on the academy roster after being singled out from over 200 other young Kiwi players in the New Zealand leg of the Nike Most Wanted event in 2016.

Bevan becomes the third Kiwi on the Whitecaps FC 2 roster, joining Deklan Wynne and Francis de Vries. Like Wynne before him, Bevan has been a member of the New Zealand U-20 national team, making his international debut with a hat-trick versus Cook Islands in the Oceania World Cup qualifiers in 2016. The six-foot striker is currently at training camp with his national side, ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Prior to his move to England, Bevan got his start with semi-professional side Western Springs AFC. He then developed in the youth team of his hometown club Auckland City FC in 2015-16, and made his professional debut with the first team as a late substitute in an ASB Premiership fixture versus WaiBOP United in February 2016.

Whitecaps FC 2 return home on Sunday, May 28 for Mutts at McLeod as fans are invited to bring their dogs to Langley's McLeod Athletic Park. For more information, visit whitecapsfc.com/wfc2tickets or e-mail wfc2@whitecapsfc.com.
