VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 got a win for all moms on Mothers Day at Thunderbird Stadium, holding off Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The match started at a fast pace as the ‘Caps were caught-flat footed right off the bat by a speedy Colorado Switchbacks team. The visitors pushed the pace from the start of the match and in the first minute winger Shane Malcolm was able to break away from the ‘Caps defence, but couldn’t find the back of the net missing only by a hair.
Switchbacks FC continued to push, using quick passes through the middle of the pitch and well placed balls to keep the ‘Caps on their heels. However against the run of play, it was the ‘Caps who were able to take advantage of a counterattack and earn a penalty kick as Marco Bustos was brought down by left back Josh Suggs, who was shown a yellow card on the play. Bustos then put away the ensuing spot kick for his second goal of the season in only his second appearance, putting WFC2 up 1-0 after 24 minutes.
Colorado Springs attacked back quickly as Eddy Prugh just missed high on a close range shot a minute later. Switchbacks FC kept pouring it on and in the 32nd minute, Sean Melvin came up with a clutch save in tight on Canadian Masta Kacher, followed up by a crucial clear on the goal line by Deklan Wynne.
The ‘Caps escaped the first half with the lead despite being outshot 15-2, including seven shots from inside the box directed at Melvin.
The second half started the same as the first with Switchbacks FC winger Kacher getting a great opportunity that ‘Caps keeper Melvin had to swat away. Just a few minutes later Suggs blasted a shot from just outside the box, but Melvin again was equal to the task coming up with another big save for the ‘Caps.
With growing confidence from their lead, a second goal came for WFC2 in the 68th minute. In the end it was 18-year-old Gloire Amanda – coming off of his first professional goal on Thursday – who booted in his second goal in as many games on a perfectly placed cross from Andy Thoma. Wynne came down the left wing and fed Thoma with speed, as the New Mexico native then placed the ball right onto Amanda’s foot for the finish to stretch the ‘Caps lead to 2-0.
Colorado Springs continued to push, but the ‘Caps again countered as Chris Serban blasted in his first goal of the season in the 82nd. The Calgary native came in one-on-one at full speed and shot a rising fastball into the short side, top corner, to put the ‘Caps up 3-0 and the game out of reach for Colorado Springs.
With the match winding down, Sean McFarlane was able to get a low kick past Melvin in the 88th minute to pull one back for Switchbacks FC. McFarlane’s goal was all that Switchbacks FC would get though as the ‘Caps picked up their fourth win of the season.
The ‘Caps next match is May 28th at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley against Real Monarchs SLC. That match starts at 3 p.m. PT and is the first edition of Mutts at McLeod as fans can bring their dogs to the match.
