IRVINE, CA – Whitecaps FC 2 (4W-10L-5D) fell 1-0 to Orange County SC (7W-4L-4D) on a hot evening at Orange County Great Park on Saturday.
Orange County opened the scoring on 10 minutes. After a short corner and cross into the box, Salomon Wbias got up for a header that was stopped by an excellent diving save from Spencer Richey, however Victor Pineda was on the doorstep to put in the rebound and make it 1-0.
Myer Bevan looked for an equalizer on 14 minutes when he connected on a spectacular bicycle effort that went just wide, but he was called for a foul by referee Michael Radchuk.
Deklan Wynne then had an opportunity on 19 minutes, getting on the end of a loose ball in the box before goalkeeper Charlie Lyon rushed out to make the save.
Bevan was back at it in the 41st minute. Midfielder Thomas Gardner played him down the left channel before he slid a low shot inches wide of the far post.
Orange County fired back with one more opportunity before halftime as Monday Etim curled a shot destined for the far netting, but Richey stretched out for a fantastic save to keep it at 1-0 going into the break.
The ‘Caps came out strong to start the second half, with a pair of chances from midfielder Marco Bustos. The better of the two came on 53 minutes, when lovely build-up play between he, Gardner, and Bevan led to a shot over the crossbar.
The best chance of the match for WFC2 came on 72 minutes as David Norman Jr. struck a great shot heading to the bottom corner, but Lyon got down to keep it out.
One final opportunity came in stoppage time as Bustos dove forward to try to get on the end of a Christian Dean cross, but it was not to be as the ball was just out of reach, sealing a 1-0 defeat.
