Match Preview - VAN vs. RGV

Young Whitecaps FC 2 look to capitalize against Rio Grande Valley FC

On the heels of a 1-0 weekend defeat to Orange County SC, Whitecaps FC 2 face a quick turnaround when they host the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros for a Wednesday nooner at UBC Thunderbird Stadium, providing the young ‘Caps a great opportunity to bounce back with a win at home.

Despite the position in the standings, WFC2 are showing promise with their run of form of late. Their last two losses were by a single goal each, and the loss on the weekend to Orange County saw the club dominate possession all match.

For a club littered with young pros, head coach Rich Fagan says it’s not so much about results, but more about development.

“I’d love to see the young guys progress but they’re only going to progress if the performances are there. A little bit inconsistent at times but for the most part they’re performing well so for me that’s what it’s about. As long as there’s the effort and the performance they’ll progress.”

18-year-old Kadin Chung is the minutes leader for the Blue and White, followed by first-teamer Cole Seiler, Kiwi international defender Deklan Wynne, and Coquitlam native teen David Norman Jr. Seiler, a second-year pro, is the oldest among the foursome at 25 years old.

Besides Seiler, other first-teamers benefiting from pitch time with WFC2 are Marco Bustos, who leads the team with five goals, and Christian Dean. The latter has worked his way back from a left foot injury last April. With Fagan keeping them sharp, the pair will be ready when first team head coach Carl Robinson comes calling.

Having lost four of five, Rio Grande Valley FC are looking for a win.

They will be without captain Eric Bird, who is tied for the team lead with three goals and two assists. The 2015 MLS SuperDraft selection by Philadelphia Union was shown the red card late over the weekend versus Portland Timbers 2.

WFC Residency graduate and former 'Caps goalkeeper Marco Carducci has five starts for the Toros this season, including last Saturday when they kicked off their Pacific Northwest road swing.

English midfielder Joe Holland leads the attack for RGV. The 10th overall pick in this year's MLS SuperDraft, Holland has two goals and one assist in his rookie year.

It will be a clash of two sides hungry for three points.

The young 'Caps are sure to entertain. Can they also get the result?

Don't miss the action. Kickoff at the 'Bird is at 12 p.m. PT.
