Whitecaps FC 2, Rio Grande Valley FC draw in wild nooner at Thunderbird Stadium

VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 (4W-10L-6D) drew the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (6W-10L-4D) 3-3 in a thrilling matinee goalfest at UBC Thunderbird Stadium on Wednesday.

The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute following a turnover. Toros midfielder Todd Wharton drove into the ‘Caps half before setting up striker Kyle Murphy, who beat keeper Sean Melvin with a low-driven shot to the far post for the 1-0 lead.

But the ‘Caps were quick to reply just four minutes later. A firm pass down the right flank opened up some space for the onrushing Kadin Chung, who connected with Terran Campbell for the point blank shot. RGV keeper and WFC Residency product Marco Carducci denied the chance but Marco Bustos was able to pounce on the rebound to tie up the game at 1-1 with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The ‘Caps started the second 45 in similar fashion. Midfielder Thomas Gardner had a strong showing on the day and proved it by providing the through ball for Myer Bevan in the 53rd minute, who converted the chance to put Vancouver in the lead 2-1, scoring his second USL goal in the process.

But once again, the visitors would reply only three minutes later off a penalty kick. A collision between Cole Seiler and Rio Grande Valley’s Joseph Holland inside the box forced referee Juan Marquez to blow the whistle and immediately point to the spot. Midfielder TJ Casner stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home, tying things up at 2-2.

The goal fest would continue in the 61st minute with Campbell exploiting some space down the left flank before driving a hard and threatening pass through the RGV keeper’s crease and connecting with Chung, who smashed in his first goal of the season to put the ‘Caps up 3-2.

But a late foul called on Dominick Zator inside the 18-yard box conceded another penalty kick in the dying minutes, allowing the visitors to draw even. Ruben Luna scored RGV’s second spot kick of the afternoon in added time to tie the game at 3-3.

Showing continued improvement despite the result, Whitecaps FC 2 now head out on a four-match road trip, beginning with a visit to Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, August 5. They are back home on Saturday, August 27 when they host LA Galaxy II at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley for Star Wars Day. Visit whitecapsfc2.com for tickets.
