Sounders FC 2 defeat WFC2 3-0 in Cascadia clash

TUKWILA, WA – Irvin Parra, Zach Mathers, and Felix Chenkam scored to give Seattle Sounders FC 2 a 3-0 victory over Whitecaps FC 2 in a Cascadia clash at Starfire Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

WFC2 got a bit of a boost in the second half with the return of Brett Levis and Chris Serban from injuries but it was not their evening, as they were reduced to 10 men in the dying minutes after Myer Bevan was sent off with a straight red card.

Sounders FC 2 opened the scoring in the 21st minute, following an acrobatic diving save by WFC2 goalkeeper Spencer Richey on Mathers’ direct free kick. The ensuing corner was initially broken by centre back Francis de Vries, but the threat lingered in the Vancouver box, as Samuel Rogers got his head on the ball before Parra stabbed in a right-footed volley for the 1-0 lead.

Mathers doubled the Seattle advantage in the 38th minute when he slid in to dispossess Richey right in front of net, poking in the loose ball to give S2 the 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Seattle picked up where they left off after intermission, tallying another goal just six minutes into the second frame. Henry Wingo initiated the attack when he won possession in the Vancouver half, then slipped in a pass to Parra down the right wing. The midfielder then whipped in a cross to Chenkam for a first-time finish.

On the other end, Levis looked lively along the left wing in his first minutes since suffering a right knee injury during his MLS debut in the 2016 regular season finale. Serban was steady at his right back position, stymieing a pair of threats in his first appearance in over two months.

Despite their efforts, WFC2 drop to a 4W-12L-6D record, while S2 improve to 8W-13L-2D.

Whitecaps FC 2 now head out for a Texas road swing, beginning with a visit to Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday, August 19. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. PT live on

They are back home on Saturday, August 27 when they host LA Galaxy II at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley for Star Wars Day. Visit for tickets.
