Increased workload benefiting Melvin

The 2017 USL season has been a solid building block for Victoria, BC native Sean Melvin. The goalkeeper has appeared in eight matches for WFC2 this season, sporting a team-high 74.4 saves success rate and 1.38 goals-against average.

After a solid performance at RGVFC Toros on Saturday, the BC boy may get the call again to help WFC2 steal a road victory from one of the USL’s best clubs in San Antonio FC. It won’t be an easy task, but it’s one Melvin will relish. Beside the eight starts, Melvin has been seen training with first team keepers David Ousted, Stefan Marinović, and Spencer Richey throughout the summer, gaining valuable experience and pointers from his goalkeeping brethren.

Wynne's consistency at left back

It’s been quite the year for young Kiwi international Deklan Wynne, who’s been a rock for Rich Fagan’s club on the backline. He leads the 'Caps in minutes played and has been sprinkling the 'Caps attack with a team-high 55 crosses from the flank. He's even found the net twice, including Saturday, in addition to one assist.

Wynne has also earned international call-ups for his country’s Confederations Cup squad, and for next month's World Cup qualifiers. Having played a full 90 in all of his appearances, it’s obvious Wynne has earned the trust of coach Fagan.

Sitting in the team's top five in clearances, interceptions, duels won, and aerial duels won, it’s no surprise the 22-year-old is seeing action with his national team on the world stage. The left back's next challenge will be trying to stop San Antonio’s offensive attack led by Billy Forbes.

San Antonio FC

San Antonio FC host WFC2 in hopes of keeping their home unbeaten streak alive. SAFC have yet to lose at Toyota Field this season, boasting a record of 5W-0L-6D. What’s more impressive is their ability not to concede as visiting teams have only managed to tally six goals in 11 home matches.

Offensively, San Antonio FC are led by Forbes who’s netted seven goals through 22 matches and was honoured earlier in the season as the USL Player of the Month for March and April. SAFC’s offense is supplemented by Kris Tyrpak (5), Cesar Elizondo (4), and Rafael Castillo (4) combining for 13 goals. The offensive depth will offer the young WFC2 backline a stiff test in the Texas heat.

After the match, Whitecaps FC 2 are back home on Sunday, August 27 at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley when they host LA Galaxy II on Star Wars Day. Visit for ticket information.
