Young Whitecaps FC 2 entertain but fall 3-1 to Tulsa Roughnecks FC

LANGLEY, BC - A young Whitecaps FC 2 side came out of the gates firing but Tulsa Roughnecks FC converted on their chances to win 3-1 on a hazy Wednesday evening at McLeod Athletic Park.

WFC2 head coach Rich Fagan started eight Whitecaps FC Residency products, a testament to the job done by the club in their youth development. Also included in the XI was Brett Levis, who played a stellar 45 minutes in his first start back from injury.

Terran Campbell, Gloire Amanda, and Kadin Chung had chances early but were unable to capitalize.

TRFC ultimately made WFC2 pay when Juan Caffa opened the scoring in the 39th minute on the heels of a nice feed from Christian Thierjung for the first-half lead.

Both clubs continued the run-and-gun play in the second half, resulting in a slew of goals coming out of the break.

The 'Caps found the scoresheet in the 50th minute on a Marco Bustos penalty kick. David Norman Jr. swung in a corner kick, resulting in a scramble inside the box, and eventually finding the hand of a TRFC defender, resulting in the penalty.

Shortly after, the Roughnecks retook the lead when Ian Svantesson made no mistake on a ball that found him far post.

Tulsa added to their lead a minute later as substitute Joey Calistri beat the outstretched hand of Sean Melvin from just outside of the 18-yard box.

Despite the loss, Whitecaps FC 2 engaged in a very high-tempo match that was thoroughly exciting to watch, launching 22 shots in total.

With the result, the ‘Caps drop to 5W-14L-7D while the Roughnecks improve to 12W-10L-4D.

Whitecaps FC 2 now head out on the road for a visit to OKC Energy FC at Taft Stadium. Kickoff on Sunday, September 10 is at 3 p.m. PT, live on whitecapsfc2.com.

They are back home on Sunday, September 17 when they host Orange County SC at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. PT. Visit whitecapsfc2.com for tickets.
