WFC2 suffer late defeat to Orange County SC in entertaining thriller at the ‘Bird

VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 and Orange County SC battled in a back-and-forth affair at UBC Thunderbird Stadium before Jerry van Ewijk slotted in a late game-winner for the visiting side on Sunday afternoon.

Zach Kobayashi gave Orange County the first-half lead before Marco Bustos equalized for WFC2 in the 55th minute, setting up the thrilling finish between the Western Conference rivals.

OCSC opened the scoring in the 40th minute on a fine counter attack. Kobayashi came flying down the left wing with the ball before cutting into the box and striking a curler far post past the outstretched arms of Spencer Richey.

The best chance in the opening half for WFC2 came off the boot of Chris Serban, who had grade A scoring chance. The shot took a deflection and then rang off the inside of the far post then back out in the 36th minute.

WFC came out firing after halftime with their efforts finally paying off in the 55th minute. Terran Campbell, with some nice ball movement on the wing, found Bustos in the box. Bustos, like a pure finisher, took the pass and one-timed his left-footed strike to the back of the net, equalizing the match.

It was then in the 83rd minute when OCSC notched the winner. Van Ewijk took a layoff pass from Irvin Parra and made no mistake, going top corner on Richey.

Whitecaps FC 2 attempted multiple strikes from distance in this match, finding OCSC keeper Casey Beyers in the bread basket. Recently acquired Danny Barbir had a shot from outside in the 50th minute with juice behind it, but the centre back would not be able to score in his WFC2 debut. Defensively, Barbir looked solid forming some early chemistry with Francis de Vries and making multiple stops.

With the result, WFC2 drop to 5W-15L-8D while OCSC improve to an even 9W-9L-9D record.

Whitecaps FC 2 continue their three-match homestand when they host Phoenix Rising FC next Sunday, September 24. Kickoff at UBC Thunderbird Stadium is at 3 p.m. PT. Visit whitecapsfc2.com for tickets.
